Volunteer

Volunteers are essential for the SDKC. Join us for the following duties:

Registration: Help racers unload vehicles, provide answers about Yankton and the course and check-in racers. We need 5-10 people, depending on the number of racers, but the more the merrier. These duties take place from around 2 p.m. Friday afternoon until that evening, all at Riverside Park in Yankton.

Pre-race set up: On Saturday morning between 5-7 a.m., we would love to have you join us to help racers get up, get ready and be set for the 7 a.m. starting gun. We work together to make sure people are in the right place as the event starts, assisting unsupported crews with their boats and gear. Volunteers who want to see the start and don’t mind an early wake-up – this is a perfect place to get involved at Riverside Park in Yankton.

Checkpoints: This is a priority volunteer assignment, as staff and volunteers host four checkpoints between Myron Grove Access and the finish line throughout the event. The first one opens between 8-9 a.m., while the rest will open as the race progresses. At each, we need volunteers to record racers’ boat numbers, cheer them on, and provide them with ice and water, and other general duties. We expect to have volunteers on site throughout the race, but won’t ask anyone to work late – unless they are game.

Check out the website's tab called "The Course" to see where the checkpoints are located. Volunteers on checkpoints will get training on their operation when they arrive.

On-water safety/spotters: This volunteer opportunity is open to any powered watercraft. We are looking for fishing and recreation powered boats that can shepherd our paddlers on the course. The key role of on-water staff is communication and observation. We will need boats and volunteers in this area from 6:30 a.m. until approx. 11 p.m. Saturday. Volunteers will be asked to patrol specific areas only, unless they feel compelled to travel from start to finish.

On-land safety/spotters (pictured): Checkpoint staff often designated spotters, but if you’d like to help in this role, we can find places along the route where you can spot boats and relay information to the staff and our checkpoints. Hours for this post would be from 9 a.m. until about 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Finish line staff: At the finish line, we’ll record the finishing time of racers as hit the finish line on the Missouri River near our South Sioux City finish HQ. We'll also assist racers as they finish with their boats and gear. Celebrating their accomplishments is a big part of the finish-line duties and they go from approx. 4-11 p.m. Saturday night.
